The project brief was to to create four desirable modern dwellings on brownfield land conducive to the demands of modern day living which would be congruent to the rich and varied context of the surrounding area. In order to accommodate the proposed development, the dilapidated single storey garage and single storey store on site would have to be demolished.
In terms of our design approach we have carefully developed a scheme that respects the form and heritage of the neighbouring C19th terraced houses and converted chapel from which the proposals have been inspired. The scale and massing of the the scheme is intended to be subservient to the existing dwelling on site. The houses feature a saw-tooth arrangement of pitched roofs with parapets running along the lengths of the property that expose the dark coloured fibre cement tiled roofs when viewed from Swindon Road. The development has been finished in neutral coloured facing bricks, with dark bricks having been used for projections on the principal elevations.
The project was granted planning approval from Cheltenham Borough Council in June 2016 and work completed in March 2018.
